Robert KKK Byrd proves he is a hypocrit.

October 22, 2007

Back when the Senate voted on an amendment condemning the ad placed in the NY Times by MoveOn.org referring to General Petraeus as General "Betray Us", I called the Senate office of Robert KKK Byrd to share my displeasure with his failing to vote in favor of this amendment.

I recently recieved a letter from his office in regard to that exchange.  The letter was dated October 4, 2007 and in it he explained that while he disagreed "with the manner in which the MoveOn.org advertisment questioned the integrity and patriotism of General Petraeus", he could not vote in favor of the amendment to condemn the ad.  He explained that the amendment was "attempting to censure a private organization;s exercise of free speech".  He went on to say, "That is a right guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution, and I will not support its infringement."

The hypocrisy is shown in the fact that just TWO DAYS EARLIER than the date on my letter, Senate Byrd signed the infamous "Rush Limbaugh Smear Letter".  A letter which not only blantantly misrepresented Mr. Limbaugh's words, but also asked for his employer to "repudiate these comments" and for Mr....

Survey ranks Nevada the most dangerous state... again

March 23, 2007 10:10 AM EDT

View the complete list

Once again, Nevada has a ranking and reputation Metro isn't too proud of: The most dangerous state in the country. That's according to a new survey. It's the fourth year in a row we've come out on top but officers aren't willing to accept the bad rap so quickly.

Type your address into Metro's crime mapping website and what you may find could surprise you. Neighborhoods riddled with reports of burglaries, robberies, assaults within the past two months.

But according to a new report from the research company, Morgan Quinto Press, it's the same old story in Nevada. For the fourth year in a row, we've ranked as the most dangerous state in the country.

Metro's Sergeant John Loretto says the survey is misleading. "Not all incidents come from the Las Vegas Valley."

The report's publisher admits these rankings are controversial, but argues rates are what they are. For example, the survey pits Nevada's 8.56 murders for every...

Mayor’s changes made things worse

March 20, 2007

Four years ago Mayor William Miller appealed to the voters of Weirton in a call for a change in leadership from former Mayor, Dean Harris. He did so successfully and became Weirton's 9th mayor. Since then, I must say, the state of Weirton has gotten so much worse that I am relieved that the chance to change the guard is near.

I hate to sound so cliché but it is really time to throw the bums on city council out. With the past four years we, the citizens of Weirton, have seen the one-time big employer Weirton Steel become Mittal Steel and our citizens forced elsewhere as there are fewer places we can find jobs. With the decline of Weirton Steel and other employers, we have seen the rise in gambling parlors which have invaded our little town with such force that it is impossible to wander a half a mile without coming across three of them. Many of us have become accustomed to the sight of the mobster-style gambling joints, but I ponder, can we do better? The answer is a resounding yes! What has the mayor and his crew of Councilmen done for Weirton but make it look... [More]

Gambling statistics

February 17, 2007

The issue of table gambling is being discussed in our area and our representatives will be voting on whether or not to allow table gambling to pass.  We cannot allow table gambling to pass and here is why.
John Kindt, Ph.D., professor of commerce and legal policy at the University of Illinoise, asserts that for every dollar of revenue generated by gambling, taxpayers must dish out at least three dollars in increased criminal justice costs, social-welfare expenses, high regulatory costs, and increased infrastructure expenditures.  (John Warren Kindt, statement before a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Small Business, 21 September 1994.)
When people tell you how much more money will come in with the table gambling remember that it WILL cost us more than we will gain!
Economists David B. Mustard of the University of Georgia and Earl L. Grinois of Baylor University insist that "Even using conservative estimates of costs and generous estimates of benefits, we still find the costs [of casino-type businesses] exceed the benefits."  Mustard and Grinois examined crime data from each county in the U.S. between 1977 and 1996, comparing statistics from those counties which had casinos and those that did not. ...

Bill Predicts $40 Million From Table Gambling

By JOSELYN KING

CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Lottery Commission projects that — if allowed at the state’s four racetracks — table gambling would generate $40 million annually for the state.

The $40 million figure is based on a state tax rate of 24 percent on the tracks’ net profits from table gambling, as well as the assumption that table gambling would be implemented at each of the four tracks. The 24 percent tax rate is the amount stated in legislation currently before West Virginia lawmakers.

House Bill 2718 and Senate Bill 369 also have language directing the tax revenue from table gambling for specific purposes, and sets forth percentages as to where the money will go.

A total of 82.5 percent of the state’s net tax revenue would be placed into the state’s general fund. If table gambling were to generate $40 million on an annual basis, this would mean $33 million yearly going into the general fund.

The next 8 percent of tax revenue is designated for race prize purses at the tracks. This would equal $3.2 million.

Horse and dog breeding funds would get the next 2 percent or $800,000....

Not Really Open for Business

December 31, 2006

It has been nearly a year since Gov. Joe Manchin declared that West Virginia is open for business. He unveiled new signs to be displayed on the highways as motorists entered the state telling them that the state is taking a new approach when it comes to business. I assume, with his name on the signs as well, he has appointed himself to the position of CEO. I am not too sure who comprises the board of directors of this company but whomever they are, they need to start looking after their interests or we can kiss this state goodbye.

Yes, the governor can put up his ridiculous looking signs if he wants, but where is the real change that needs to take place? It is not unheard of to see the vacant shops around any town you pass through in West Virginia. In fact in any city here, it is actually the norm to see the disappearance of stores.

Countless studies and polls from the U.S. Chamber Commerce to Forbes Magazine tell us that our state is heading in the wrong direction, yet the state government fails to listen. For 70 years there has been one party in power...

Democrat and Republican Holiday Greetings

December 14, 2006

For My Democratic Friends:
"Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. And without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wisher. By accepting these greetings you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself or himself or others, and is...

Pelosi's choice for Intelligence Committee Chair FAILS simple quiz about terrorist groups

December 11, 2006

Rep. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, who incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped to head the Intelligence Committee when the Democrats take over in January, failed a quiz of basic questions about al Qaeda and Hezbollah, two of the key terrorist organizations the intelligence community has focused on since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
When asked by CQ National Security Editor Jeff Stein whether al Qaeda is one or the other of the two major branches of Islam -- Sunni or Shiite -- Reyes answered "they are probably both," then ventured "Predominantly -- probably Shiite."

That is wrong. Al Qaeda was founded by Osama bin Laden as a Sunni organization and views Shiites as heretics.

Reyes could also not answer questions put by Stein about Hezbollah, a Shiite group on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations that is based in Southern Lebanon.

Stein's column about Reyes' answers was published on CQ's Web site Friday evening.

In an interview with CNN, Stein said he was "amazed" by Reyes' lack of what he considers basic information about two of the major terrorists organizations.

"If you're the baseball commissioner and you don't know the difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox, you...

Philanthropy Expert: Conservatives Are More Generous

November 17, 2006

By Frank Brieaddy
Religion News Service

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University professor Arthur C. Brooks is about to become the darling of the religious right in America -- and it's making him nervous.

The child of academics, raised in a liberal household and educated in the liberal arts, Brooks has written a book that concludes religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.

In the book, he cites extensive data analysis to demonstrate that values advocated by conservatives -- from church attendance and two-parent families to the Protestant work ethic and a distaste for government-funded social services -- make conservatives more generous than liberals.

The book, titled "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism" (Basic Books, $26), is due for release Nov. 24.

When it comes to helping the needy, Brooks writes: "For too long, liberals have been claiming they are the most virtuous members of American society. Although they usually give less to charity, they have nevertheless lambasted conservatives for their callousness in the face of social injustice."

For the record, Brooks, 42, has been registered in the past as a Democrat, then a Republican, but now... [More]

Same old same old for Hancock County

November 8, 2006

We were told by the media that voters would be going to the polls this year looking for change.
What change did the voters in Hancock County get?
The voters of Hancock County decided to continue the more than 50 years of absolute Democrat control of the levers and switches of power in our area.
By doing so, they have also decided to continue the abject failure that has accompanied such control.
The voters have decided to continue policies that have produced double digit inflation in our county when our national unemployment is at 4.4% and our state unemployment rate is at 5.4%.
They have decided to keep the same people in power that have done nothing to improve our situation.
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while each time expecting a different result.
When the voters of Hancock County vote differently, they may be able to expect different results.
Instead, in this election they decided simply to respond to our represenatives with a collective "thank you sir, may I have another?".
